Pancakes: A Global Favourite with an Indian Twist
Pancakes — soft, warm, and slightly crisp at the edges — are one of the most loved meals across the world. Whether it’s a quick morning bite or a cozy evening snack, pancakes have a way of bringing comfort to every plate. Drizzled with honey (or syrup), topped with fruits, or simply savoured with butter, they’re a favourite across all ages.
But have you ever paused to wonder where this fluffy delight actually came from? Surprisingly, pancakes have been around for centuries. The earliest versions trace back to ancient Greece and Rome, where people prepared flat cakes using simple grains like wheat and barley. They didn’t have the eggs, milk or sugar we now associate with pancakes — just humble ingredients shaped into nourishing, hearty bites.
Even back then, people experimented. They added herbs, fruits, and natural sweeteners, turning basic batter into something special. Over time, pancakes travelled — evolving with every culture they touched. Today, nearly every country has its own take: French crêpes, Ethiopian injera, Russian blinis, and even our beloved Indian dosas.
The beauty of pancakes is how simple and flexible they are. Every culture adds its own twist — changing the ingredients or cooking style — but the idea stays the same.
At Sonkan, we’ve embraced the charm of the pancake but given it a healthier spin. Inspired by this global journey, we crafted our own clean and wholesome versions — rich in fibre, free from preservatives, without artificial flavours, and no maida (refined flour), made entirely with real ingredients and our very own millets — no shortcuts, just honest food.
Because we believe breakfast should be both delightful and nourishing — for your child and your family – a tribute to tradition and a step toward better living.
