We would like to share an inspiring story about a wonderful initiative by our parents, Dr. Nitin Deodhar and Dr. Meenakshi Deodhar.

From Interest to Passion: The Beginning of a Farming Journey

Almost a decade ago, our father developed an interest in farming. Interest would be an understatement—it became his passion. And then he systematically set about achieving it.

At age 45, he used to drive 6 hours every week from Pune to acquire cultivable land in Ratnagiri district along the Konkan belt.

Learning the Land and People

After acquiring the land, he spent weeks away from family, staying alone on barren land, trying to understand:

• The people

• The soil

• The market

• The science behind sustainable farming

Slowly but surely, he began shaping his dream of having his own farm. The seeds of toil were planted, watered, and cared for.

A Family’s Leap of Faith

Our mother soon realised that this was not just a passing phase—or a “midlife project,” as I jokingly called it then.

At age 50, both our parents quit their jobs and left their comfortable life in Pune for the small village of Tetavali. While our dream was always to work just enough to relax in our 50s, this bold decision left us puzzled.

Experimenting with Organic Farming

Over the next few years, our parents:

• Experimented with organic farming

• Tried horticulture techniques

• Created employment and opportunities for local communities

While it’s still a work in progress, their dedication laid the foundation for something bigger.
